The second requirement is the ability to remain unobtrusive. When a butler’s work is going well, those present do not notice the butler’s existence. Whether one can accept that this is work unlikely to receive praise distinguishes suitability from unsuitability.

Does Gender or Age Matter

Gender is not a consideration. As for age, many enter the profession after gaining experience in society; that experience itself informs the judgements required in service.

One may work without a certificate, yet clients need to know by what standard a practitioner has been recognised. Skipping this order produces technicians who cannot read a room.
