If you are thinking of learning the ways of the butler, there are a few things I should like to share with you as head of the Association. Something matters more than age or prior experience, and it can be cultivated even before you enrol.
In these pages I shall set out the frame of mind I hope you will bring to your studies, together with thoughts on turning that learning into a career. The formal procedures themselves are detailed on the official site.
Does Age or Experience Pose a Problem?
It does not. A good number take up the study only after years in other work, and that experience translates directly into sound judgement on duty.
This is not a calling in which youth holds any special advantage. Experience of arranging schedules, of learning from mistakes, and of smoothing awkward moments serves the practical work of a butler extremely well.
Nor is sex
Nor does gender present any barrier. Depending on the nature of an engagement, there are occasions when a lady butler is precisely what is required.
Hours spent facing people carry over
Whatever the previous work, the hours spent facing other people carry over intact. Someone who stood at a counter, someone who sat beside a sickbed, someone who handled papers — the habit of noticing a change in another person grows the same way in any workplace.

What I Hope You Will Bring to Your Studies
The habit of observation and record-keeping. After meeting someone, noting that person’s preferences or state of mind is something you can begin today.
A butler’s skill rests upon what is remembered. No matter how polished one’s deportment, it is of little use if one does not know the preferences of the person one serves.
No qualification is needed first
The discipline of writing matters down, rather than relying on memory, greatly improves the efficiency of one’s learning.
"No sugar" is grain enough
There is no requirement to obtain any qualification before enrolment. Cultivating this habit beforehand will prove far more valuable.
What is written need not be weighty. That no sugar was taken, that the chair was drawn back a little before sitting — that grain is enough. Anyone who can write at that level sees more in the classroom too.

The grain can be small
Do not rely on memory

A Mindset Worth Keeping in Mind
The work of a butler seldom attracts praise. The more seamlessly matters proceed, the less one’s presence is noticed; whether one can accept that structure is the decisive point.
It is the client who should receive the acclaim at any gathering, never the butler. Success in the role is measured by the quiet remark that everything felt entirely natural, as though the butler had scarcely been there at all.
Something does accumulate
I state plainly that this work does not suit those who seek constant recognition.
By the second and third visit
In return, one is left with the quiet satisfaction of having supported another’s important moments. Those who remain in the profession for many years find their reward precisely there.
In place of praise, this work accumulates something. Visiting the same household a second and third time, more passes without needing to be explained. That sense of it stays in a form quite unlike applause.

How Learning Leads to Employment
After the final practical assessment, a clear path leads to certification by the Association, so that study need not remain an end in itself.
Since the teaching, the recognition and the step into a household run on without a break, there is a route forward once studies are complete.
The route to qualifying
Certification, however, is only a beginning; the demands of service continue to evolve, so learning persists beyond that point.
There is more than one road
The sequence leading to qualification is described on the page entitled How to Obtain a Butler’s Qualification.
There is more than one way to carry the learning into work. Some go on to the association's households; others take the forms back to the workplace they already have. We do not regard the second as a half-measure. That people with a butler's manners appear in every kind of workplace is the condition on which this culture survives.

Where to Find the Procedures
Details of enrolment, schedules and entry requirements are published on the official site of Japan Butler Academy, Japan’s school for butlers.
What I have set out here concerns the outlook one brings to study. Because recruitment circumstances and conditions may change, please consult the official site directly.
Come while still undecided
I am also happy to receive enquiries from those still undecided; I shall answer frankly, including the question of suitability.
The door stays open after enrolment
The door for consultation stays open after enrolment: when doubts arrive mid-course, and when someone runs aground after going out to work. The tie with the school begins at admission and does not end at the closing ceremony.

What the instructor watches at the one-day course
Not how well the vessels are handled. Whether, while the instructor speaks, the student is looking at their own hands or at his face.
To anyone hesitating we suggest the one-day course. In half a day you touch the service of tea and the form of the bow, and can judge the air of the room before choosing a course.
What is watched is the gaze
What I watch there is not skill with the vessels but where the eyes go while the instructor is speaking. Most people watch the equipment in their hands; occasionally someone watches his face. That person is already looking at other people before being taught to, and from the first day they are given a form one step further on.
One in three will not become a butler
Of those who appear for the half day, perhaps one in three has no thought of becoming a butler. They come wanting to receive their own people properly, or to change how their shopfront greets a caller. That is fine by us. Every person who carries the movements back to a house or a shop is the profession being understood a little further.

Can this be done alongside a job
It can. Classes sit on Saturdays and Sundays, and preparation moved to video, precisely so that a weekday post can be kept.
Most students hold another job during the week: service, office work, medicine, manufacturing. The course sits on Saturdays and Sundays and preparation was moved to on-demand video so that no one need leave their present post.
The burden is stated honestly
To be honest about the burden, it fills weekends for about two months — one for Essential, three for Master. Clashes with family plans over that period cannot be avoided, and we always say so at the enquiry stage.
Why it stands on the bay
That the building sits on the bay owes something to a judgement that a little distance from the busy quarters does no harm. Making a few changes of train on a free day and coming out beside the sea helps shift the head from work to study. Few call it time wasted.

What if it turns out not to suit
We say so plainly. Years spent somewhere that does not fit costs far more, to us and to the person, than an early parting.
At the enquiry stage we answer on the question of fit as well. Once it has been said honestly that this is a calling seldom praised in public, some turn towards another road. We do not enter that in the column of losses.
Leaving partway is allowed
Others realise partway through the course that this is not their work. They are not made to finish. Yet most of those who left partway tell us later that they still use the forms they learned in daily life, and that seems to us enough.
Some change the other way
The reverse happens too: someone who came for the culture of it decides partway to aim at the profession. Either direction is fine. Not fixing the destination at the door is this school's policy on admission.
Frequently Asked Questions
At what age may one begin studies?
Age presents no difficulty. Many begin after acquiring social experience, and that experience serves directly as practical judgement in the field.
Is there any preparation required before enrolment?
No qualification is necessary. Forming the habit of noting a person’s preferences or state of mind after each meeting will allow your studies to progress more rapidly.
May ladies also study?
They may. Gender is no barrier. Depending on the nature of an engagement, there are occasions when a lady butler is precisely what is required.
Can this be studied alongside a job?
It can. Classes are at weekends and preparation is on video. Your weekends will be full for the duration, so please raise any family commitments before enrolling.
Might you tell someone it does not suit them?
We might. We say plainly that this work rarely draws praise. Years spent somewhere that does not fit costs far more, to us and to the person, than an early parting.
