How to Attain a Butler's Qualification

In Japan, obtaining a butler's qualification requires following a sequence of study, practical examination, and certification by the Association. With no national qualification in existence, the standards are established by the All Japan Butler Association. From my position as Chairman, I shall explain the path from learning to certification in order.

The Overall Picture of Qualification Acquisition

One studies at the Japan Butler Academy, undergoes the practical examination at completion, and upon passing receives certification from the Association. These three stages constitute the basic flow.

I do not envisage a path where one attempts the examination without study. As the examination involves practical skills, it is predicated upon receiving instruction beforehand. Following the proper sequence ensures that certification standards are maintained.

What the Examination Assesses

Both skill and bearing are examined. In addition to precision of movement, the practical test confirms whether the candidate observes the other party and can arrange the setting without drawing attention.

I have not made the examination written only, because knowledge alone does not guarantee the ability to perform duties. Candidates must move in person so that their responses in the moment can be observed. Scenes that do not proceed as expected are deliberately introduced.

Understanding of confidentiality is also assessed. As this is a prerequisite before any technique, certification is withheld if this area remains unclear.

Whether Certification Has Levels

It does. Levels are divided according to the scope one can handle, distinguishing from basic service up to the oversight of complex situations.

Levels exist because the range that can be entrusted in actual duties differs. For those requesting service, knowing which level of butler will be assigned is important information.

Whether Obtaining the Qualification Leads to Work

Butlers who receive certification are directed through the Association to places where they are needed. The qualification is nevertheless only a starting point, and continued study thereafter is assumed.

Because training, certification and placement form a continuous process, a path after study is prepared. Even so, one does not become complete upon receiving certification. The service required changes with the times.

Standing in a position where one is chosen also encourages further study. The butler register is made public both for transparency and to provide motivation for refining one's strengths.

Whether the Qualification Can Be Obtained While Working

Many begin study after gaining experience in other occupations. Curricula at different levels are provided according to purpose.

The experience of those who have come from other professions serves directly as judgement in the field. Youth is not necessarily an advantage.
