Unable to demonstrate my movements, I find myself explaining the reasons behind each action. Since my gestures cannot be seen, my explanations centre on the reasons. Listeners therefore find the advice easier to put into practice.

Where a television appearance might rely on showing a movement, radio requires me to put every step into words. I explain why a particular order is followed, or why an item is placed in a certain position, and in doing so I clarify my own understanding.

Points I Keep in Mind While Speaking

I avoid speaking in absolutes. Etiquette varies with region and occasion, and presenting any single form as the only correct one would unduly restrict the listener.

It is tempting to declare one method the right way, yet in practice the most suitable form changes according to the setting. I therefore present the underlying principles and also note where personal judgement may be exercised.

I consider it part of hospitality not to make listeners feel constrained.
