Introducing Queen's Butler

Queen's Butler is the venture through which we bring the hospitality and culture of the butler to women. We have prepared settings in which guests may encounter the butler's craft via three approaches: the salon, attire and culture. Here, from my position as Chairman of the All Japan Butler Association, I set out the thinking behind the venture. Schedules and applications appear on the official website.

What the venture entails

We provide women with venues in which to experience a butler's hospitality together with opportunities to engage with butler culture. This creates an entry point distinct from simply requesting personal service.

For many people the notion of being attended by a butler remains distant. An accessible first encounter makes the profession itself feel far more immediate, and Queen's Butler is conceived precisely as that gateway.

Guests may enjoy the experience as a special occasion, or they may use it as an opportunity to observe manners and bearing.

What takes place in the salon

Guests spend time being attended by a butler. From the manner of greeting and seating to the service of beverages, the full sequence of a butler's conduct is experienced directly.

A butler's conduct is conveyed more swiftly by experience than by explanation. One notices the timing with which refreshments appear and the tone in which one is addressed; the contrast with everyday exchanges becomes immediately apparent.

Programmes focused on learning specific forms of conduct are also arranged from time to time.

Initiatives concerning attire

We offer items based on the butler's own attire, providing one further gateway through which butler culture may be felt at close hand.

Every element of a butler's dress arises from practical considerations: ease of movement, cleanliness and unobtrusiveness. We have translated these principles into forms suitable for everyday wear.

What we wish to convey as culture

Butler culture consists of the accumulated attentions that put others at ease. It is not reserved for those in special positions; its principles may be applied in daily life.

The gestures of hospitality are designed to spare the other party unnecessary decisions: indicating where to sit, signalling when departure is appropriate. These considerations serve equally well at home or in the workplace.
