An association training session on rebuilding a schedule

ACTIVITY

The Work of the All Japan Butler Association

The work of the All Japan Butler Association centres on training butlers, certifying them according to our standards, placing them where they are needed, and spreading the culture of butlery far and wide.

In these pages I shall set out, section by section, exactly what the Association does, including those aspects that are not immediately visible from the outside.

Butler Training

Through the Japan Butler Academy I provide a structured programme for those who aspire to become butlers. Instruction alternates between lectures and practical exercises so that skills are acquired step by step.

Because deportment cannot be corrected by oneself, self-study has clear limits. That is why serving butlers continue to give direct instruction.

Dates and content sit with the school

The curriculum is arranged so that students progress from fundamentals to international service in clear stages.

Classroom, examination and field agree

Full details of the syllabus and schedule may be found on the official site of Japan Butler Academy, Japan’s butler school.

From a student's side, the advantage of the association keeping its own school is that the form taught is the form examined, and the form recognised in the examination is the form asked for in the field. Learn elsewhere and sit our assessment, and those three drift apart by degrees.

Certification and Standards

The Association maintains its own certification system and awards qualifications only after candidates pass staged examinations that include practical assessment.

Since Japan has no national butler qualification, these standards are set by the Association itself.

Knowledge alone cannot guarantee the quality of service. That is why every examination includes a practical component. Certification is not an end point but a marker that further refinement is expected.

The grades are set out on the certification page

The grades of certification and the principles behind the examinations are explained in detail on the certification page.

Associate

Tea and table service, receiving a visitor, how to stand and bow. The grade able to carry an engagement of a few hours alone.

Professional

Wine service, running an occasion, keeping the household records. The grade to whom a day or a week may be entrusted.

Master

Directing other staff, judging in a crisis, designing how a whole household runs. Instructors and resident butlers come from this grade.

Sending butlers where they are needed

I arrange for certified butlers who meet our standards to be sent wherever their services are required. The arrangements themselves are carried out by THE BUTLER.

Training and certification are of little value if there are no positions in which butlers can practise their craft.

Where to apply

I therefore place butlers in private residences, corporate hospitality, events and ceremonies, offering engagements that range from a few hours to full-time residence.

The assignment does not change

The terms of engagement and how to proceed are set out on THE BUTLER's own pages.

What we watch most closely in arranging a butler is that the same person can keep returning. If the individual changes each visit, the household must explain its rules from the beginning every time. The assignment is left unchanged, and where a handover truly cannot be helped, the one leaving hands over to the one arriving before the next visit.

Promoting Butler Culture

Through cooperation with journalists, media appearances, lectures and training sessions I present an accurate picture of the butler’s profession. Publicity is never an end in itself.

There is often a gap between the butler portrayed in fiction and the reality of the work. Unless that gap is closed, clients will not consider engaging a butler.

Where to reach us for interviews

Appearances on television, in magazines and on websites, as well as lectures, are all undertaken for this purpose.

Precisely while our existence is doubted

Enquiries about interviews or speaking engagements are welcome via the contact page.

The question most often asked at lectures is whether butlers really exist. It is proof that the profession is taken for something out of a story, and I welcome it. Precisely while our existence is doubted, there is a point in describing an actual day in detail.

Is the Association a Questionable Organisation?

The Association is incorporated as a general incorporated association and publishes its standards in full. The register of affiliated butlers is also public, so anyone may verify who has been recognised and under which criteria.

Because the profession of butler is unfamiliar to most people, it is natural that questions arise about whether such practitioners really exist and whether they can be trusted.

Incorporated, with the criteria published

I am aware that searches containing words such as “reputation” or “suspicious” are made, and I address these concerns directly.

What can be answered is answered

The Association operates as a general incorporated association. Its standards of confidentiality, discipline and dignity are published in writing.

Certification always includes practical examination, and the names of certified butlers appear on a public register. By making clear who performs the work and under what standards, I provide the information needed for informed choice.

Should any point remain unclear, please contact me. I shall answer every question I can. Transparency is the only way to earn trust.

Seminars are held outside the classroom

Corporate seminars go to the client. Unless it happens at the actual reception desk, along the actual route, what was learned in a classroom comes apart in the company's own corridor.

Corporate training is not gathered into a classroom because the routes differ by trade. Hotels, clinics, department stores, estate agencies, restaurants. Which door a visitor enters by, where they pause, whom they first address, differs not only by trade but by building. The association keeps a form for each trade and reshapes it to the site.

We go back six months later

Whether it worked is not judged from the marks on a form handed out that afternoon. Two seasons later we visit the same building and look with our own eyes at whether the movements have stayed. Order that holds only for a day proves nothing entered the body. If it has gone, we rebuild the teaching and come back.

The front desk begins to move differently

The response is plainest in how the person on the front desk moves. Someone who used to take enquiries without leaving their chair will afterwards get up at the sound of the door and come out from behind the desk to meet whoever has arrived.

Speaking publicly is not about exposure

Interviews and lectures are accepted in order to close the gap between the butler of fiction and the actual work. Numbers are not the aim.

The profession is well known through stories while the work itself is hardly known at all. While that gap remains, engaging a butler never becomes an option anyone considers. Interviews are given and lectures delivered to close it one piece at a time.

Some requests are declined

Not every request is accepted. Programmes that treat a butler as a curiosity, or formats that turn deportment into a spectacle, are declined. Declining means less exposure, but it is better not to appear at all than to spread a false picture.

What is written stays

Work that takes the form of books and textbooks follows the same reasoning. A broadcast is gone the same day; what is written stays and can be checked afterwards. The 2026 volume on a butler's manners and culture, supervised by the head of the association, belongs to this effort.

What happens at members' gatherings

Seats are not divided by grade. A master butler and someone newly joined sitting at the same table is itself teaching material.

Alongside the butlers who hold a grade, the roll carries the names of those who simply wish to see this craft continue. At gatherings I take care not to seat people by grade. This work moves not from paper but from the hands of whoever sits beside you, so the hours in which unlike grades share a table are worth something on their own.

Those who engage are on the same roll

Among the supporting members are people with no plans to engage a butler and people who engage them. That those who ask and those who are asked appear on the same roll is what stops the articles from being written to suit one party alone.

What surfaces in conversation

What is said at these gatherings becomes material for revising the articles. Difficulties in the field appear in the written reports too, but the harder something is to write down, the more likely it is to surface in conversation at the table.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the All Japan Butler Association actually do?

I oversee the training of butlers, their certification according to published standards, sending them where they are needed, and the promotion of butler culture. All four elements are required if the profession is to continue.

Can the Association be considered trustworthy?

It operates as a general incorporated association and publishes its standards of confidentiality, discipline and dignity. Certification always includes practical examination, and the register of affiliated butlers is open to inspection.

How do I engage a butler?

THE BUTLER takes charge of the arrangements. The terms and the steps are set out on its own pages.

Are corporate seminars held in a classroom?

They come to you. Unless it happens at the actual desk and along the actual route, the form comes apart in your own corridor. We return six months later to check it has held.

Are all interview requests accepted?

They are not. Programmes that treat a butler as a curiosity, or that turn deportment into a spectacle, are declined.
