Early Preparation (5:30-7:00)
The day begins early. Before the household wakes, everything must be made ready. The butler perfects their own appearance and reviews the day's schedule.
The weather is checked and preparations made to match the day's plans. The day starts by confirming the newspaper delivery, checking mail, and noting any urgent matters, together with the final check of grooming, house safety, breakfast readiness and coordination with staff.
Morning Service (7:00-10:00)
Timed to the household's waking, a flawless morning service is provided: preparing morning tea or coffee, laying out the newspaper, and confirming the day's plans.
Breakfast is prepared and served, additional requests attended to, and, where there is an outing to come, advice offered on fitting attire. The morning turns on three things: refreshment, information and the management of the day's schedule.
Daytime Duties (10:00-17:00)
While the household is out, the butler manages the residence, handling a wide range of work efficiently: overseeing cleaning, receiving callers, answering the telephone and making arrangements.
House management covers supervising cleaning staff, inspecting facilities, checking security, and managing stock and the garden and vehicles. Reception and correspondence cover receiving guests, taking messages, sorting mail, making reservations, and preparing reports for the household.
Evening Service (17:00-20:00)
Timed to the household's return, the evening service is prepared: afternoon tea or a cocktail to ease the day's fatigue, and the arrangement of dinner.
The day's events are reported, the next day's plans confirmed, and clothing or other arrangements prepared as needed. Creating an environment in which the household can relax is what matters.
Night Duties and the Professional Spirit
At night the butler prepares for the next day and makes a final check of the residence: confirming security, readying the next day's schedule, and setting the day's records in order.
